INDIAN AVIATION HISTORY

 HOW DID AVIATION START?

Aviation happened way back in the form of kites, hot air balloon etc. But the first flight of heavier than air aircraft happened on 17th December, 1903 by Orville and Wilbur Wright aka wright brothers. It happened at kitty Hawk, North Carolina for 12 seconds at 120ft. The aircraft was made up of wood and cloth known as The Wright Flyer, sometimes referred to as The Kitty Hawk Flyer. Isn't it fascinating?
This is about the history of aviation as a whole. Let us hop into the history of aviation in India.

AVIATION IN INDIA

Aviation in India did not start for the next 8 years. The first flight in India took place on 18th February 1911. It was not done by an Indian, It was flown by a french aviator Henri Pequet. He flew a Humber Biplane from Allahabad to Naini station covering a distance of 9.7km in about 15 minutes. It wasn't a passenger flight, it was actually an airmail flight, carrying 6500 mails and a few letters.
The hardest thing to believe is that there was no fan fare when he landed at Naini junction except the postman. NO FAN FARE TO RECEIVE INDIA'S FIRST EVER FLIGHT!!!

For the next 2 decades such flights were very common. Even international mail flights happened during that period.

THE FOUNDATION OF AIRPORTS IN INDIA

The first airport in India to come up were in 1924 in Kolkata, Mumbai and Allahabad (Kolkata is considered as the oldest airport in India)

FIRST INTERNATIONAL PASSENGER FLIGHT IN INDIA

The first international passenger flight took 7 days to reach India.
SOUNDS CRAZY RIGHT?
this flight was of Imperial airways now called as British airways, from London to Karachi (in 1929 Karachi was part of India). This journey involved 4 different aircrafts and included 20 stops en route using multiple modes of transport. Obviously this sounds insane to travel 7 days with different modes of transport which could be completed in only 10 hours today by air.But 7 days are nothing compared to 3 weeks which it would take if traveled by ship at that time.

JOURNEY TO INDIAN CIVIL AVIATION

In 1929, India's first flying school- Bombay flying club was started. They handed out their first ever Commercial Pilot Licence to one and only JRD Tata, the father of Indian civil aviation. He started TATA Airlines in 1932 now known as Air India, our national airline. The airline started at Juhu airport based in a small hut with thatched roof. The first flight was piloted by JRD Tata himself in Puss Moth which carried 25kgs of mail and was from Karachi to Mumbai via Ahemdabad .
In 1932, India also got its first domestic flight from Mumbai to Trivandrum costing Rs250 (at that time).
In 1948 Air India operated its first international flight from Mumbai to London. This flight had a special name called Malabar Princess, 40 seater Lockheed L-749A constellation..
And finally, in 1953 Air India was nationalized with JRD Tata as its chairman.

This is how Aviation took place in India. With all the efforts of JRD Tata, we are here having such a big industry.  No wonder he is called the pioneer of aviation in India.
